WATERTOWN, Mass. - Unlike any artwork preceding it, British artist Cerith Wyn Evans' "A=P=P=A=R=I=T=I=O=N" creates a whirlwind of changing sounds using giant rotating mobiles that have circular mirror-like devices equipped with directional audio technology from Holosonic Research Labs . Holosonics' Audio Spotlight® Systems, which deliver targeted sound to a specific location while eliminating ambient noise, are used in Evans' piece to project music, sound effects and speech in every direction while moving across the room in an unpredictable manner. The artist's work can be seen at Yokohama Triennale 2008, the international triennial of contemporary art, which runs through November 30 in Yokohama, Japan.

Evans commissioned Holosonics to create customized versions of its directional speakers for his "A=P=P=A=R=I=T=I=O=N" piece. "The artwork was heavily dependent on the technology that Joseph Pompei had developed with the Audio Spotlight," said Evans. Special transparent cabling was used to hang the variously-sized speakers from giant mobiles, while the outer surfaces of the speakers were covered with a patterned, mirrored material. As the speakers slowly rotate, sounds build with intensity, fade out suspensefully, surprise listeners suddenly as sounds fly by their face and vanish just as quickly as they became audible. The experience for each listener is unique to their position in the room, making them an integral part of the artwork.

"The way the installation was conceived was very well aligned with the original intent I had for the technology," said Dr. F. Joseph Pompei, inventor of Audio Spotlight technology. "It is really rewarding to see the technology being put to such a creative use."
