SIX AUDIO SPOTLIGHT AS-16IX DIRECTIONAL SPEAKERS GUIDE VISITORS THROUGH…

A JOURNEY OF MEXICO’S DISTINCTIVE EVERYDAY SOUNDS

As Mexico welcomed visitors from around the world during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, México Aquí offered a different way to experience the host country’s identity: through the vibrant sights, sounds, traditions and everyday moments that make Mexican culture so distinctive.

Located in Mexico City, the temporary multisensory exhibition invites visitors on a journey through six immersive rooms, each exploring a different facet of Mexican culture. Rather than a traditional museum experience, México Aquí combines art, imagery, artifacts, video, interactive installations and sound to create a vivid sensory portrait of Mexico’s culture and identity.

And in the exhibition’s Music room, that story is told through sound.

WALKING THROUGH THE SOUNDS OF MEXICO

Entering the Music room, visitors are drawn down a dramatically lit corridor toward a towering installation of oversized loudspeaker drivers. Along the central pathway, six circular floor markers identify individual sounds, inviting visitors to progress through a sequence of distinct listening experiences.

Directly overhead, six Audio Spotlight® AS-16iX directional speakers, supplied and integrated by Holosonics reseller Navits, are discreetly incorporated into the ceiling—one above each designated listening position.

As visitors move through the room, the experience changes every few steps. One position might reveal the call of a neighborhood street vendor; the next, the unmistakable sound of a traditional organillo; elsewhere, the familiar sounds of the Mexico City Metro and other distinctive sounds of everyday Mexican life emerge.

The result is not simply a room with accompanying audio. Visitors become immersed in a sonic journey through Mexico, physically moving from one characteristic sound to the next as they progress through the exhibit.

DESIGNING SIX EXPERIENCES IN ONE SPACE

That carefully choreographed journey presented a fundamental audio challenge.

The six listening positions sit only a short distance apart, yet each represents a distinct sonic experience. Reproducing them simultaneously with conventional loudspeakers could allow the individual tracks to spill throughout the corridor, competing with one another and disrupting the thoughtfully designed progression through the exhibit.

Audio Spotlight technology provided a different approach.

Each AS-16iX projects a highly directional beam of sound downward toward its corresponding floor marker. Visitors entering a designated listening area hear its soundtrack clearly; as they continue forward, one experience gives way naturally to the next.

The same precision that solves a technical audio problem therefore becomes an integral part of the exhibit itself: the visitor’s movement between localized sound zones helps tell the story.

INTEGRATING THE EXPERIENCE

Navits integrated the six AS-16iX speakers into the overhead architectural element running the length of the Music room, preserving the exhibit’s visual design while precisely aligning each speaker with its intended listening position below.

The installation also incorporates independent audio content and system control for the individual sound experiences.

For an exhibit designed around movement and discovery, the resulting experience is intuitive. Visitors simply follow the path, step into a marked position and listen before continuing forward to discover the next sound.

The technology integrates discreetly into the architecture while the sounds—and the stories behind them—take center stage.

Holosonics made that possible. Its hyper-directional technology allowed us to recreate authentic everyday soundscapes—from the iconic street vendors and organ grinders to the sounds of the Metro and countless other elements of daily life—while keeping each listening point completely independent.

SHARING MEXICO THROUGH SOUND

México Aquí arrived at an extraordinary cultural moment. As international attention turned toward Mexico during the 2026 FIFA World Cup and visitors from around the globe experienced the host country firsthand, the exhibition offered another way to discover Mexico beyond the tournament itself—through its history, creativity, traditions and the unmistakable character of everyday life.

Within the Music room, some of those stories could only truly be told by hearing them.

By selecting Audio Spotlight directional speakers to deliver those sounds, the exhibit’s designers transformed a single shared corridor into a self-guided sonic journey, allowing visitors to discover the familiar and distinctive sounds of Mexico one step at a time.
