HOLOSONICS’ FOUNDER DISCUSSES
THE INVENTION OF DIRECTIONAL SOUND
On a recent episode of the Sound in Marketing Podcast, Holosonics Founder and CEO Dr. F. Joseph Pompei discussed Audio Spotlight directional sound technology – a revolutionary tool for creating uniquely memorable and highly effective marketing campaigns with narrow beams of audio. In the podcast, Dr. Pompei describes the technology and history behind directional audio, including his inspiration as a teenager when he first developed the concept of directional sound.
In the podcast, hosted by Dreamr Productions Founder Jeanna Isham, Dr. Pompei described what he perceived as the shortcomings of traditional loudspeakers which inspired him to invent directional sound technology over twenty years ago.
"Loudspeakers are very good at filling rooms with sound but you had very little control over where the sound was or where it went,” he said. “I thought it would be really cool and interesting to do something different where maybe you could make sound appear from places where there was no speaker or maybe you could make sound that could be delivered to one person and nobody else would hear it."
For its use in museums and other similar settings and applications, the flexible and self-powered Audio Spotlight directional speaker is a powerful tool, ensuring that any exhibit has its own isolated audio, captivating listeners with an immersive, personal experience, while keeping the surrounding area quiet. Audio Spotlight technology is used to deliver public advertisements in areas where sound was not often considered previously, if not altogether prohibited, and is used in a wide variety of other settings that include retail stores, libraries, hospitals, airports, and many other locations throughout the world.
For creative marketing campaigns, Audio Spotlight is currently used throughout the world to reach consumers through a wide range of mediums. In the OOH advertising industry, the Obie-winning Audio Spotlight has been used in conjunction with outdoor digital billboards, in-store retail activations, and digital HD projection campaigns. Audio Spotlight technology enables businesses to push the limits of traditional marketing, incorporate focused sound where it previously was not possible, and deliver cutting-edge marketing campaigns.
In the podcast, Dr. Pompei described how he invented the revolutionary, patented directional audio technology.
“When you have any sound source, whether it's somebody speaking, or a loudspeaker, or a phone, the way sound is made is that a membrane vibrates - something vibrates and moves the air and creates sound waves,” he said. “The Audio Spotlight is very different – it's the only device in the world that uses ultrasound to create audio.”
